Journalism
Sunday Express
City Desk Reporter
Richard served on the City Desk of the Sunday Express as a reporter, working out of the newspapers offices in the Northern & Shell Building, on Lower Thames Street south of the River and close to the City.
Here he reported on everything from new websites for fashion retailers to hacking incidents an Russian banks!
"It was a thrill to work on 'Fleet Street'," says Richard. "Even if, by then, it wasn't actually in Fleet Street!"
Internet Magazine
Site Reviews Editor
Richard started on Internet Magazine (the then leading magazine in the industry) as senior reporter and quickly rose to Site Reviews Editor.
He was responsible for all website reviews in the magazine and as such had to go through some 1,000 sites per month (the number that were being launched at that time) to sort the chaff from the wheat.
He also deputised for the editor on occasions - especially where media appearances were concerned.
Real Business
Assistant Editor
Real Business was launched in 1998 as an alternative to the somewhat stuffy business magazines available at the time. The publication went on to win many awards and has reshaped the world of British business magazines.
Richard was the assistant editor on the magazine, assisting with its inception and launch and taking Real Business through its first two years of life. During this time he interviewed many leading business people and even appeared on the cover (see left) himself!
Director
Editorial Assistant
After his work in local news, this was Richard's first job in periodicals. "Anyone who has worked as an editorial assistant will know that it is little more than secretarial and organisational work," says Richard.
"But I believe it is a core apprenticeship that should be served in magazine publishing because you learn everything about magazine production."
Business Bulletin / D2D
Editor
Richard's second professionally published work came in Business Bulletin, which was the customer magazine of High Street printers, Kall Kwik. He served as editor on the publication intermittently for a decade between 1995 and 2005!
During this time, Richard wrote and edited some 150 articles for the magazine on subjects as diverse as buying a private jet and playing buzzword bingo! He also oversaw the re-launch of the maagzine as D2D in 2005.
Leisure World
Editor
While at Caspian Publishing (the company that produced Real Business), Richard cut his teeth as editor on a number of contract publications such as LeisureWorld, which was the customer magazine of catering group Gardner Merchant (later Sodexho).
During his tenure of two years, the maagzine covered stories on Cool Britannia, the World Cup, Jet Fighters and Motor Racing. "Comparisons with FHM were totally unfounded..." Richard says.
